While most of the attention is focused on the wines of California, especially the wines of Napa and Sonoma, the wineries of the Pacific Northwest have been making some pretty good products themselves. Here, we’ll stop by two wineries, Covey Run in Washington State’s Columbia Valley and Oregon’s King Estate outside Eugene. Covey Run is perhaps best known for its Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, which we’ll match to the cuisine of Walter Pisano at Seattle’s Tullio restaurant. King Estate shines with Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris, and its operation includes its own chef and some pretty serious cuisine. Two great wineries and a bunch of great wine-it adds up to a darned good show.
Travel alongside Dave as he journeys to the Rocky Mountains to see why Former First Lady Betty Ford loved the Vail Valley and the Rocky Mountains that surround it. She lent her name to this unique Alpine garden which has become not only the highest elevation public garden in the world but also an internationally recognized center for research, preservation and education on high elevation wildflowers. The garden consists of various botanical zones organized by elevation and slope aspect with a gushing mountain creek cascading from one level to the next under massive timber bridges. Also in this episode, Dave travels to Santa Fe where David Salman showed him around the demonstration garden for his retail nursery and mail order catalog, High Country Gardens, in historic Santa Fe, New Mexico. A life long resident of Santa Fe, David chose drought tolerant hardy perennials that provide masses of color for intermountain, plains, and west coast gardeners.

It’s been awhile since I’ve been back to the Pacific Northwest, and after this trip I was wondering what the heck took me so long. Beautiful and delicious, this is a great part of the country. In Oregon, I had the good fortune of sampling the wines of King Estate, some of the finest in the state. From Pinot Noir to Pinot Gris, the wines of King Estate are true expressions of terroir. Up in Washington State, my focus turns to pears. The best pears in the world come from this part of the country, and I’ll take you inside the harvest, and give you some ideas for creating culinary classics with these Northwest beauties. Pinot and Pears-quite the combination!
